The coin's story
This 50 francs coin in aluminium-bronze, 91% copper and 9% aluminium, is the highest denomination of the series designed by Georges Guiraud. Introduced in 1950 in 10, 20 and 50 francs, the series remained in use until the new franc of 1960. The obverse shows the head of Marianne wreathed with olive, the reverse a cockerel above an olive branch. Around the date are the wing of Lucien Bazor, engraver general, and the cornucopia of the Mint. The 1952 date has 74,211,600 pieces in Paris, this example does not bear the letter B of Beaumont-le-Roger. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 3 August 1966.
