Morlon series in aluminium (1941-1959)

The coin's story

This aluminium 1 franc coin, weighing barely 1.3 grams, takes up Pierre-Alexandre Morlon's type, created in 1931 in aluminium-bronze. The Vichy regime had suspended this type in favour of the francisque. According to Numista, striking resumed very soon after the liberation of Paris, from September 1944, with the equipment available. The 1948 coins were struck in Paris and at Beaumont-le-Roger, whose coins bear the letter B, this example does not. The 1948 date has 96,092,000 pieces in Paris. The type was struck until 1959, and the coin ceased to be legal tender on 14 February 2002.
