Francisque series of the French State (1942-1944)
This 2 francs coin in aluminium alloyed with 5% magnesium was struck under the French State, the Vichy regime (1940-1944). The regime abandoned the republican symbols: the legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE became ÉTAT FRANÇAIS, and the motto Liberty, Equality, Fraternity gave way to TRAVAIL FAMILLE PATRIE (Work, Family, Fatherland). The obverse shows a francisque between two ears of wheat, whose handle bears the inscriptions S PACIS and PETAIN. Both sides are the work of Lucien Bazor, engraver general of the coinage. The type was struck in 1943 and 1944, the 1943 date has 114,573,271 pieces in Paris, and 34,131,000 at Beaumont-le-Roger (letter B). The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.7 mm.
