The coin's story
This nickel 5 francs coin, of 12 grams and 31 millimetres, is the first type by André-Henri Lavrillier, struck from 1933. It succeeded the same year Lucien Bazor's 5 francs, nicknamed the “Bédoucette”, which the public found too small compared with the old silver 5 francs coins. Lavrillier's coin is twice as heavy. The obverse shows the head of the Republic wreathed in foliage, the reverse RF and the value within a wreath. The 1933 date has 56,686,410 pieces. This nickel version ceased to be legal tender on 22 September 1939.
