Series of 2 francs with the Sower (1977-2001)
This nickel 2 francs coin takes up Louis-Oscar Roty's Sower, created in 1897, but in a new version, with a rising sun on the horizon and the words D'APRÈS O.ROTY (after O. Roty). The type was struck from 1977 to 2001, and it was put into circulation on 24 March 1978. The reverse combines an oak branch and an olive branch behind the value, within an octagonal border. According to Numista, the mark of the engraver general varies with the years: none in 1977, a dolphin from 1978 to 1994 for Émile Rousseau, then a bee and a horseshoe afterwards. The 1980 date has 100,010,011 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.71 mm.
