Morlon series in aluminium (1941-1959)

The coin's story

This 2 francs coin in aluminium alloyed with 5% magnesium takes up Pierre-Alexandre Morlon's type, created in 1931 in aluminium-bronze. The Vichy regime had suspended this type in favour of the francisque. After the Liberation, the Morlon type was taken up again, but in aluminium, a light and cheap metal. The 1947 coins were struck in Paris and at Beaumont-le-Roger, whose coins bear the letter B, this example does not. The 1947 date has 78,984,000 pieces in Paris. The type was struck until 1959 and ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
