The coin's story
This 5 francs coin in aluminium-bronze, 91% copper and 9% aluminium, takes up the type by André-Henri Lavrillier, created in 1933 in nickel. The less costly aluminium-bronze version was put into circulation on 26 September 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War. The 1940 date was struck in the year of the defeat, which saw the end of the Third Republic and the installation of the French State at Vichy. The type nevertheless continued to be struck, with its legend REPVBLIQVE FRANÇAISE, until 1947. The 1940 date has 8,190,881 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
