The coin's story

This nickel 1 franc coin commemorates the bicentenary of the convocation of the Estates General, assembled at Versailles on 5 May 1789, at the beginning of the French Revolution. One side shows three figures representing the clergy, the nobility and the Third Estate in the Salle des Menus-Plaisirs at Versailles. The other places the value within a laurel wreath. Both sides are the work of Claudine Béréchel. According to Numista, a booklet devoted to the coin was distributed to schools in 1989. The coin was struck in 5,012,011 pieces and ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002.
