The coin's story
This 10 francs coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze commemorates the centenary of the birth of the aviator Roland Garros (1888-1918). A pioneer of aviation, on 23 September 1913 he achieved the first crossing of the Mediterranean by aeroplane. One side shows his bust and his aircraft, a Morane-Saulnier Type N, the other, a bird's head with outspread wings over the outline of France's Atlantic coast. Both sides are the work of Hervé Duetthe. The coin was struck in 29,973,011 pieces for circulation. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1993.
