Centenary of the birth of Robert Schuman (1886-1986)
This nickel 10 francs coin commemorates the centenary of the birth of Robert Schuman (1886-1963). As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he laid the foundations of European integration with his declaration of 9 May 1950. One side shows a stylised cockerel, the work of John Lobban, the other, Schuman's profile and the twelve European stars in the shape of an E, the work of Bernard Turlan. Like the Jimenez 10 francs of the same year, it was quickly withdrawn: it was confused with the ½ franc coin of the same size, especially by visually impaired people. Struck in 9,961,011 pieces, it ceased to be legal tender as early as 1 March 1987.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.4 mm.
