Series of cupronickel 10 francs by Turin (1947-1949)

The coin's story

This 10 francs coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, was designed by the engraver Pierre Turin. Struck from 1947 to 1949 under the Fourth Republic, it accompanied the post-war rise in prices. The obverse shows the right profile of Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap and a wreath of foliage, the reverse, two ears of wheat around the value and the motto. Numista distinguishes a “small head” and a “large head” according to the position of the cap relative to the beaded border. The 1949 coins were struck in Paris and at Beaumont-le-Roger (letter B). The coin ceased to be legal tender as early as 1 August 1953.
