The coin's story

This 10 francs coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze commemorates the centenary of the death of Victor Hugo in 1885. One side brings together the writer's work: an open book and a quill, a theatre mask recalling the playwright, and scenes from Les Misérables, with Gavroche on a barricade, Cosette and Notre-Dame de Paris. The other side shows the bust of Victor Hugo and a laurel branch. Both sides are the work of Claude Lesot. The edge bears the incuse LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, depending on its reading direction, edge A and edge B are distinguished, as on this example. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1993.
