Series of cupronickel 5 centimes by Lindauer, small module (1920-1938)

The coin's story

This 5 centimes coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, is pierced with a central hole. The type designed by Edmond-Émile Lindauer was tried in nickel as early as 1914, then struck for circulation in cupronickel from 1917. For the 5 centimes, a smaller module of 17 millimetres replaced the large 19-millimetre module in 1920. According to Numista, some coins bear a small lightning bolt, the mark of the Poissy mint, which struck coins from 1922 to 1927. The 1931 date has 34,711,236 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 24 November 1940.
