Centenary of the death of Léon Gambetta (1882-1982)
This 10 francs coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze commemorates the centenary of the death of Léon Gambetta (1838-1882). After the fall of Napoleon III, Gambetta played an important role in the proclamation of the Third Republic on 4 September 1870. In October, as Minister of the Interior in the Government of National Defence, he left besieged Paris by balloon to reach Tours and organise the raising of troops. One side shows his profile, the other, a hot-air balloon rising above flags, in memory of this departure. Both sides are the work of Émile Rousseau. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1993.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.5 mm.
