The coin's story
This bimetallic 10 francs coin, with a nickel centre and an aluminium-bronze ring, was designed by Jean-Luc Maréchal. The obverse takes up the winged Genius of Liberty holding a torch, between the letters R and F, on a background of striated geometric patterns. The reverse places the value and the date in front of a striated triangular figure. Struck from 1988 to 2001, it succeeded the nickel 10 francs of 1986, Schuman and Jimenez, quickly withdrawn because they were confused with the ½ franc coin. The 1988 date, the first, has 99,992,576 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
