The coin's story
This zinc 10 centimes coin, pierced with a central hole, was struck under the French State, the Vichy regime (1940-1944). Zinc, a poor metal, replaced the cupronickel of the pre-war holed coins. The legend ÉTAT FRANÇAIS replaced RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE, and the republican motto disappeared. Both sides are the work of the engraving workshop of the Paris Mint, which signs A. DE G. According to Numista, the weight and thickness vary greatly, because of the poor quality of the zinc and the wear of the equipment. The 1941 date has 70,860,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 20 March 1947.
