France · 1973 · 5 francsSeries of cupronickel 5 francs with the Sower (1969-2001)
This 5 francs coin in nickel-clad cupronickel takes up the Sower designed in 1897 by Louis-Oscar Roty, with a rising sun on the horizon. After the introduction of the new franc in 1960, the 5 francs with the Sower was first struck in 835 thousandths silver, from 1960 to 1969. It was then replaced by this version in nickel-clad cupronickel, struck from 1969 to 2001. The reverse combines an olive branch, an oak branch and an ear of wheat below the value. The 1973 date has 45,079,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
