The coin's story
This 5 francs coin in aluminium-bronze, 91% copper and 9% aluminium, takes up the type by André-Henri Lavrillier, created in 1933 in nickel. The aluminium-bronze version was put into circulation on 26 September 1939, at the beginning of the Second World War, and struck until 1947. The 1945 date was struck under the Provisional Government of the French Republic, after the Liberation. It was produced in Paris and at Castelsarrasin, whose coins bear the letter C, this example does not. Numista gives 13,044,007 pieces for 1945 in Paris. The coin long remained in use and ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
