Nickel 10 francs by Jimenez (1986)

The coin's story

This nickel 10 francs coin, 21 millimetres across, was designed by Joaquin Jimenez. One side shows a Marianne with a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and laurel, on a stylised map of France, the other, a Gallic cockerel below the value. Much smaller than the Mathieu 10 francs it was meant to replace, it was poorly received, and it was confused with the ½ franc coin. It was withdrawn very quickly and ceased to be legal tender as early as 18 February 1987. According to Numista, an error variety exists where Brittany touches the rim. The date has 87,942,011 pieces.
