The coin's story
This 20 francs coin in aluminium-bronze, 91% copper and 9% aluminium, belongs to the series designed by Georges Guiraud, introduced in 1950 in 10, 20 and 50 francs. The obverse shows the head of Marianne, the reverse a cockerel above an olive branch. On this type, the engraver's first name is reduced to an initial, G GUIRAUD, whereas it is written in full on an earlier type. According to Numista, the cockerel's tail has three or four feathers in 1950, then four from 1951. The 1952 date has 130,281,000 pieces in Paris, this example does not bear the letter B of Beaumont-le-Roger. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1970.
