Bicentenary of the First Republic (1792-1992)
This nickel 1 franc coin commemorates the bicentenary of the First Republic, proclaimed after the fall of the monarchy and the storming of the Tuileries in August 1792. The obverse takes up the revolutionary Marianne created in 1795 by Augustin Dupré: a Liberty with a draped bust, wearing the Phrygian cap, inspired by Minerva. The reverse, after Pierre-Joseph Tiolier, places the value within a laurel wreath. The coin was struck in 30,000,033 pieces for circulation. It ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.5 mm.
