The coin's story
This 10 francs coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze was designed by the painter Georges Mathieu, inventor of lyrical abstraction. According to the Monnaie de Paris, it is the most emblematic of his coin designs: in it he evokes the technical and industrial progress of the Trente Glorieuses. One side shows a radiant map of France with the interlaced letters RF, the other, stylised shapes of cranes, pylons and buildings. The type was struck from 1974 to 1987. The edge bears LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, in direction A or B. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1993.
