Series of cupronickel 25 centimes by Lindauer (1917-1937)

The coin's story

This 25 centimes coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, is pierced with a central hole. Edmond-Émile Lindauer's type replaced Patey's nickel 25 centimes, without a hole, struck from 1903 to 1905. First issued in nickel in 1914, the Lindauer 25 centimes was struck in cupronickel from 1917 to 1937. The obverse bears the RF monogram below a Phrygian cap adorned with a cockade, within an oak wreath tied with a ribbon. According to Numista, there is a rare variety for 1920 with a reeded edge. The 1920 date has 18,108,122 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 January 1942.
