The coin's story

This 5 francs coin in nickel-clad cupronickel commemorates the 10th anniversary of the death of Pierre Mendès France (1907-1982). A left-wing politician and President of the Council in 1954, he brought about peace in Indochina. One side shows his facing portrait, with his name engraved incuse. The other side bears a pattern of interlaced strokes evoking two of his books, “Gouverner, c'est choisir” (To govern is to choose) and “Choisir” (Choosing). Both sides are the work of Émile Rousseau. The coin was struck in 10,000,363 pieces and ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002.
