Nickel 25 centimes by Patey, 2nd type (1904-1908)

The coin's story

This nickel 25 centimes coin is the second type designed by Henri-Auguste Patey. The first type, round, struck in 1903, was a failure: it was the first coin of this denomination since 1848, but it was too close to the franc in size. In 1904, the reverse was redesigned and the coin became a twenty-two-sided polygon. The new reverse shows a lictor's fasces crossed by an axe, set on an oak branch. Numista gives 16,000,000 pieces for 1904. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 June 1933.
