The coin's story
This 5 centimes coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze belongs to the series of small denominations created for the new franc. The profile of Marianne wearing the Phrygian cap, facing the wind, is the work of the sculptor Henri Lagriffoul, it appeared on French coins from 1962. The reverse, with the value between an ear of wheat and an olive branch, was engraved by Adrien Dieudonné. The 5 centimes of this type was struck from 1966 to 2001. Numista also notes varieties with three or four folds in Marianne's collar. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
