Francisque series of the French State (1942-1944)
This 1 franc coin in aluminium alloyed with 5% magnesium was struck under the French State, the Vichy regime (1940-1944). The regime replaced the legend RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE with ÉTAT FRANÇAIS and the republican motto with TRAVAIL FAMILLE PATRIE (Work, Family, Fatherland). The obverse shows a francisque between ears of wheat, and the reverse the value between two oak sprigs. Both sides are the work of Lucien Bazor, who signs LB. This heavy version weighs 1.6 grams, a 1.3-gram version exists for 1943 and 1944. The 1942 date has 152,143,791 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.85 mm.
