Bicentenary of the birth of Stendhal (1783-1983)
This 10 francs coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze commemorates the bicentenary of the birth of Stendhal (1783-1842). One side shows the writer's portrait with the signature of his real name, H. Beyle. The other brings together the façades of St Peter's Basilica in Rome and Milan Cathedral, two cities important in his life and work, an open book with a quill, and a laurel sprig recalling his post as consul. Both sides are the work of Jacki Mauviel. The edge bears LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ, in direction A or B. The coin was struck in 3,000,972 pieces and ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1993.
