Series of ½ franc with the Sower (1964-2001)

The coin's story

This nickel ½ franc coin takes up the Sower designed in 1897 by the engraver Louis-Oscar Roty. The new franc, worth 100 old francs, was introduced in 1960, the Sower then returned on the new coins. The ½ franc with the Sower was struck from 1964 to 2001. Numista distinguishes two types: the signature O. Roty alone, as here, and the signature preceded by D'AP. The 1969 date has 47,150,050 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
