The coin's story

This 5 centimes coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, is pierced with a central hole. The type designed by Edmond-Émile Lindauer was tried in nickel as early as 1914, during the war, the 5 and 10 centimes adopted this holed design, and striking for circulation began in cupronickel in 1917. This large 19-millimetre module was struck only from 1917 to 1920. In 1920, it was replaced by a smaller module of 17 millimetres. The 1920 date has 51,321,082 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 24 November 1940.
