The coin's story
This 2 francs coin in aluminium-bronze, 91% copper and 9% aluminium, is one of the last strikings of Pierre-Alexandre Morlon's type in this metal. Created in 1931 for the 50 centimes, 1 franc and 2 francs denominations, the type shows the Republic in profile to the left and two cornucopias around the value. The 1941 date was struck under the French State, the Vichy regime. This regime then replaced the Morlon type with the francisque type, in poorer metals. The Morlon type was taken up again in aluminium after the Liberation. The 1941 date has 16,683,717 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 5 August 1949.
