Series of 1 centime with the ear of wheat (1962-2001)

The coin's story

This stainless steel 1 centime coin, the smallest denomination of the new franc, was struck from 1962 to 2001. Both sides were designed by Marcel Guilleminet: an ear of wheat surrounded by the legend république française in cursive script, and the value surrounded by the date. According to Numista, some coins show a small ridge of metal at the bottom of the right leaf of the ear. This is not a die variety but a manufacturing defect, due to the hardness of the steel, which quickly wears the die at this point. The 1967 date has 52,310,217 pieces, including 2,305 in uncirculated sets. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2005.
