The coin's story
This 5 centimes coin in nickel-aluminium-bronze, 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel, belongs to the series of small denominations of the new franc. The profile of Marianne facing the wind is the work of the sculptor Henri Lagriffoul, whose Marianne appeared on French coins from 1962. The reverse, engraved by Adrien Dieudonné, places the value between an ear of wheat and an olive branch. The type was struck from 1966 to 2001. The 1980 date has 180,010,011 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 17 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
