The coin's story
This half gulden (½ gulden) in 900 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1838 to 1856 in the name of William I (Wilhelm I.), King of Württemberg from 1816 to 1864. It derives from the Munich Coinage Treaty of 1837, by which six southern German states formed a monetary union and unified their gulden, divided into 60 kreuzer. This treaty also prepared the harmonisation with the northern states, achieved by the Dresden Treaty in 1838. The King's portrait is the work of the engraver Carl Friedrich Voigt, who signs below the bust. The coin was struck at the Stuttgart Mint.
