Series of aluminium-bronze 5 Reichspfennig with the eagle (1936-1939)

The coin's story

This aluminium-bronze 5 Reichspfennig coin belongs to the series that the Third Reich introduced in 1936 to replace the types of the Weimar Republic. The eagle with outspread wings holds a swastika within a wreath, above the legend DEUTSCHES REICH and the date. This type, still struck in a copper alloy, was abandoned in 1939: as copper was reserved for armaments, the small denominations switched to zinc. The 1937 date has 29,700,000 pieces in Berlin.
