10 pfennig of the Bank deutscher Länder (1949)

The coin's story

This 10 pfennig coin in brass-clad steel belongs to the first series of the Deutsche Mark. The currency reform of 20 June 1948, in the three western occupation zones, made the Deutsche Mark the only legal tender from 21 June. Before the creation of the Federal Republic, the coins were issued in the name of the BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER and were struck only in 1949. Adolf Jäger designed a young oak sprout on one side, and the value between two ears of rye on the other, from 1950, the legend became BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND. The coin remained valid until 31 December 2001. This example bears a small J, Numista distinguishes a large J, struck in 154,095,000 pieces, and a small J, without a separate mintage.
