Series of 2 Reichsmark with Hindenburg (1936-1939)

The coin's story

This 2 Reichsmark coin in 625 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1936 to 1939 under the Third Reich. The reverse bears the portrait of Paul von Hindenburg (1847-1934), field marshal of the First World War and then President of the Reich, who appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor on 30 January 1933 and died the following year. The obverse shows the regime's eagle holding a wreath that surrounds the swastika. The obverse was engraved by Franz Paul Krischker and the portrait on the reverse by Alfred Vocke. The edge bears the slogan GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ (The common good before self-interest). The letter E indicates the Muldenhütten Mint, in Saxony, which struck 3,725,000 pieces in 1937.
