Series of coins of the Saar (1954-1955)
This 100 francs coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, is the last coin of the Saar, struck in 1955. After the Second World War, the Saar was detached from Germany and placed under a French protectorate. The franc replaced the Reichsmark and the Saar mark there from 20 November 1947, at a rate of 20 Saar marks to one franc. The coins of the Saar, struck at the Paris Mint, are local issues of the French franc, of the same alloy, size and weight. The obverse, designed by Theo Siegle, shows the arms of the Saar within a circle whose lines reach the rim. The 1955 date has 11,000,000 pieces. On 23 October 1955, 67.7% of the Saarlanders rejected the European statute proposed for the region, which joined the Federal Republic on 1 January 1957. The Saar franc was replaced by the Deutsche Mark on 6 July 1959, at a rate of 100 francs to 0.8507 mark.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.8 mm.
