1 pfennig with the hammer and compass (1952-1953)
This aluminium 1 pfennig coin was struck by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), founded on 7 October 1949. The currency of the East was created in June 1948, in response to the currency reform of the western zones of 20 June. In 1952, the ear of wheat and gear wheel of the first series gave way to the hammer and compass set on two ears of wheat, a symbol of the alliance of workers, peasants and the intelligentsia, which foreshadowed the State emblem. The coin still bears the name DEUTSCHLAND. Both sides were designed by Franz Paul Krischker, and the type was struck only in 1952 and 1953. For 1952 in Berlin, Numista distinguishes a large A and a small A, the large A has 297,213,351 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 1970.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.55 mm.
