The coin's story
This aluminium 2 mark coin was struck by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It bears the State emblem: the hammer and compass within a wreath of rye tied with a ribbon in the colours black, red and gold. The currency of the East was created in June 1948, in response to the currency reform of the western zones of 20 June. Unlike the coins of the 1950s, the value bears only the word MARK. The type was struck in Berlin from 1972 to 1990. The 1977 date has 27,858,700 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1990, on the eve of monetary union with the Federal Republic.
