First series of the Soviet zone and the GDR, 10 pfennig (1948-1950)

The coin's story

This aluminium 10 pfennig coin belongs to the first series of coins of the Soviet occupation zone, which became the GDR in 1949. The currency of the East was created in June 1948, in response to the currency reform of the western zones of 20 June. The coins still bear the name DEUTSCHLAND and an ear of wheat in front of a gear wheel, a symbol of the alliance between worker and peasant, the emblem of the Two-Year Plan. Both sides were designed by Franz Paul Krischker. The 1948 date has 216,537,385 pieces in Berlin. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 1970.
