Silbergroschen of Frederick William IV (1841-1852)

The coin's story

This 1 Silbergroschen coin in billon, a poor alloy of 222 thousandths silver, was struck under Frederick William IV, King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861. It belongs to the thaler system: as its legend states, 30 Silbergroschen make one thaler. The words SCHEIDE MÜNZE mean “subsidiary coin”, that is a coin whose face value exceeds the value of its metal. The obverse shows the King's portrait to the right. The letter D denotes the Düsseldorf Mint, Prussia also struck in Berlin (A). According to Numista, contemporary counterfeits exist for 1848 A, lighter and thinner.
