Series of GDR 1 mark with the State emblem (1972-1990)

The coin's story

This 1 mark coin in aluminium was struck by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It bears the State emblem: the hammer and compass within a wreath of rye tied with a ribbon in the colours black, red and gold. The GDR created its own currency in response to the western currency reform of June 1948, and its coins were mostly struck in aluminium. The type was struck from 1972 to 1990, in Berlin (A). The 1977 date has 119,813,200 pieces in Berlin. After monetary union with the Federal Republic, the coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1990.
