Hyperinflation coinage (1923)
This aluminium 200 mark coin was struck in 1923, at the height of the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic. Such a high value on a small, light coin shows how far the mark had collapsed: prices were then doubling within a few days. One side shows the displayed eagle and the motto EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT (Unity and justice and freedom), the other, the value and the date between two oak branches. Both sides were designed by Josef Wackerle. On 15 November 1923, the Rentenmark replaced the paper mark at a rate of one trillion marks to one Rentenmark. According to Numista, the coin ceased to be legal tender as early as 15 November 1923. The date has 174,900,023 pieces in Berlin.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.2 mm.
