The coin's story
This ½ mark coin in 900 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1905 to 1919, under Emperor William II and then at the beginning of the Weimar Republic. The mark, divided into 100 pfennig, was introduced in 1873 in the new German Empire, it replaced the thalers and gulden of the former states, whose last coins were abolished on 1 January 1876. Like all the subsidiary coins of the Empire, it bears the imperial eagle rather than the portrait of a sovereign, with the legend DEUTSCHES REICH (German Empire) on the reverse. The letter below the eagle indicates the mint: A for Berlin, D for Munich, E for Muldenhütten, F for Stuttgart, G for Karlsruhe and J for Hamburg. The 1906 G date, struck in Karlsruhe, has 4,272,502 pieces, there are also 10 to 30 in proof. The coin was demonetised on 20 April 1920.
