Potsdam Garrison Church (1934-1935)
This 5 Reichsmark coin in 900 thousandths silver, struck in 1934 and 1935, depicts the Garrison Church in Potsdam (Garnisonkirche). On 21 March 1933, after the Reichstag fire, this church hosted the ceremonial opening session of the new Reichstag, the “Day of Potsdam”, in the presence of President Hindenburg and Chancellor Hitler. The coin exists in two versions, one dated 1934 with the swastika, the other undated. It was designed by Alfred Vocke and Reinhard Kullrich. The edge bears the slogan GEMEINNUTZ GEHT VOR EIGENNUTZ (The common good before self-interest). This example bears the letter J of the Hamburg Mint. The church, destroyed in the bombing of 1945, was demolished in 1968.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.3 mm.
