Nickel 25 pfennig of William II (1909-1912)

The coin's story

This nickel 25 pfennig coin was struck under William II, German Emperor from 1888 to 1918. Created to fill the gap between the 10 and 50 pfennig coins, it is one of the few German coins in the Art Nouveau style. One side, by Paul Sturm, shows the crowned imperial eagle with the arms of Prussia, the other, by Otto Schultz, the value within a wreath of four ears of wheat. Poorly received by the public, the denomination was struck only from 1909 to 1912. The 1911 date has 3,178,815 pieces in Berlin. As nickel was needed for the war effort, the coin was withdrawn from 1916, and ceased to be legal tender on 1 October 1918.
