Series of 10 pfennig with the oak sprout (1950-2001)

The coin's story

This 10 pfennig coin, in brass-clad steel, belongs to the small denominations of the Deutsche Mark, created by the currency reform of 20 June 1948. It takes up Adolf Jäger's design of the first coins of 1949: a young oak sprout on one side, the value between two ears of rye on the other. The legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND replaced that of the Bank deutscher Länder from 1950. The type was struck from 1950 to 2001 at the Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg mints, and later also in Berlin. The 1950 date has 393,209,024 pieces in Munich. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 2001, with the changeover to the euro.
