Series of 50 pfennig with the woman planting an oak (1949-2001)
This 50 pfennig coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, shows a kneeling woman planting a young oak. The design pays tribute to the “Kulturfrauen”, the women who replanted the German forests, overexploited during the war, the Bank deutscher Länder was then looking for an image without political significance. The design is by Richard Martin Werner, who submitted it on 2 January 1949, and the model was his wife, the artist Gerda “Jo” Werner. Until 1971, the edge is reeded, as on this example, it became plain afterwards. The 1970 date has 25,294,000 pieces in Munich. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 2001, with the changeover to the euro. This example is recorded as a “large D”, Numista notes these letter-size varieties without a separate mintage.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.58 mm.
