First series of the Soviet zone and the GDR, 50 pfennig (1949-1950)

The coin's story

This 50 pfennig coin in aluminium-bronze belongs to the first series of coins of the Soviet occupation zone, which became the GDR in 1949. The currency of the East was created in June 1948, in response to the currency reform of the western zones of 20 June. The coins still bear the name DEUTSCHLAND and a factory and a plough, a symbol of the alliance between worker and peasant. Both sides were designed by Franz Paul Krischker. The 1950 date has 67,703,000 pieces in Berlin. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 August 1958.
